Gourmet gifts you’ll love bringing back from Paris

Some come to Paris for its history, others for its romanticism, and some for its delicious refined food. Whichever reason brings you to the City of Light, the unequalled cuisine of French restaurants, with their wines and cheese, are amongst the activities you cannot miss. Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann can suggest you restaurants, wine tasting bars or food shops in accordance with your trip budget and your culinary cravings.

French sea salt, an ingredient you will love!

May it be for your family, for your friends or for yourself, a food souvenir is always a pleasant good to bring home. When we think about French food souvenirs, we often have in mind wine, chocolate, cheese, or macarons. Few tourists think about bringing home French salt, an ingredient which can season every dish!

French sea salt is renowned and greatly appreciated in France and abroad, especially the salt from Camargue. Camargue is a natural region located south of France, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Rhône River delta. It is there that the salt “Fleur de Sel de Camargue” is produced. The method of gathering sea salt in Camargue is to draw seawater into basins, and to let the water evaporate. As the water does so, some salt crystals float on its surface, forming a delicate crust of crystals called “Fleur de sel”, or “Flower of Salt”. It is one of the finest quality salts, and is sometimes called “the caviar of sea salts”.  It is said that the name Fleur de Sel comes from the aroma of violets that develops as the salt dries.

French gourmet salt can be a very appreciated culinary souvenir to offer to the ones you love, especially for those who like cooking or who using coarse salt. One must still know that French sea salt should only be used to flavor food, and not used during the cooking process. Fleur de sel is best consumed if you add it as a seasoning, just before serving your meal. It can gently enhance the flavor of meat, fish, vegetables, eggs…and even chocolate and caramel!
